My inspiration to teach comes from a few different places. When I first entered college I planned on going into research full time. I enjoyed science and thought that a lab job would be the right direction for a career. By my sophomore year I was not so sure. I liked research but I wasn't sure that I wanted to do that for the rest of my life. In high school I spent a decent amount of time working as a lifeguard at a summer camp. I also taught swim lessons and was an assistant coach for the town swim team. I loved working with children. It was very rewarding for me to work with a young swimmer from the beginner swimming stages to the advanced. I decided that a teaching career in science would combine my love for science and working with children.
I only had one science teacher in high school that made science very interesting and taught with a very hands on approach. His name was Mr. Lavallee and I was in his freshman biology class and junior year anatomy and physiology class. Biology was great because we were able to do quite a few labs and see the practical application of science. Part of the reason that I decided to take the junior year anatomy and physiology class was because Mr. Lavallee taught the class. I am glad that I chose to take this class because I learned much more in depth science as a junior. I also got to dissect some pretty cool stuff. We dissected a sheep's brain, a cow eye, a bone, and a cat.
Another part of my teaching inspiration came from the fact that I actually had some not so great teachers throughout my life. I decided that if I were to ever become a teacher I would do certain things differently. For example, as a teacher I would find multiple ways to teach a topic and not assume that all students learned the same way. That was a big problem in high school especially with some older teachers who were very set in their ways. I would also choose to go out of my way to help the students in the class who need it the most. I went to a private high school in Rhode Island, and while it was a great school, they tended to cater much more to the so called "elite" students or "top of the class". In my opinion some of the teachers that I had throughout my four high school years should have done more to help the underdogs and not just the top performing students.
Overall my goal as a teacher is to provide a safe, efficient, and fun classroom. This goal stems from a desire to work with students and help all students be the best they can be.
